Mosconi Cup 2017: Europe Lead After Day One
Team Europe head into day two of the 2017 Partypoker.com Mosconi Cup with a commanding 4-1 lead in Las Vegas.
The event started off with the customary team match featuring all 10 players involved in this years Mosconi Cup. Europe finished this match with a 5-3 victory to take an early lead in a match that is race to 11 points.
The 1500 strong crowd at the Mandalay Bay were treated to some top action across the evening but home fans had little to cheer as Europe followed up the team win with a further 3 wins on the bounce to take a 4-0 lead.
The one way traffic was stopped in the final session of the day when Shane van Boening, the most experienced player on the US team, sunk recently crowned US Open Champion Jayson Shaw by a 5-1 scoreline.
Earlier in the evening there was some controversary in the Dennis Hatch versus Joshua Filler singles match.
20-year-old German Filler, playing in his first Mosconi Cup, beat Dennis Hatch in a 5-4 thriller that saw the German whoop and cheer at the victory. This reaction seemed to upset Hatch who then refused to shake Filler's hand after the match.
Although the reaction may not be regarded as particularly sporting it is expected in this cauldron of sporting pressure. It is Filler's first Mosconi Cup and it was his first time in front of such a large crowd playing a singles match.
Hatch has to understand that it is more a release of pressure over the victory than a slight on him as an opponent.
Johan Ruijsink, a former winning captain of the European side, brought a huge amount of optimism to Team USA this year as he switched allegiances to lead a new look Team USA.
That optimism suggested that Team USA could lift the trophy for the first time in seven years. However, after this first days play some of that has fallen flat as Team USA failed to take any chances that came their way and Europe held on to a number of tough matches by running out under pressure.
Three further days are yet to be played and there is of course still time for Team USA to make a comeback but being three behind so early in the competition puts the pressure firmly on US shoulders.
