Niels Feijen Wins Eurotour Austrian Open
August 07, 2015 14:51
In what turned out to be a very high class final, Dutchman Niels Feijen defeated German Joshua Filler 9:7 to win the 2015 Dynamic Billard Austrian Open.
Before the game started many thought it would be a thriller and the many spectators that stayed in the venue and were watching via the live stream on the Internet were not disappointed.
The final contained everything that die-hard fans and neutrals could wish for with the first few racks being close to perfect. Both players were on top form and after nine racks the scoreboard displayed a small advantage for Feijen with 5:4 lead.
Filler then made a mistake when he attempted a safety on the 2-ball when Feijen played a push-out instead of handing the situation back to Feijen. He left an open table for Feijen and he duly ran out, taking a 6:4 lead in the race-to-9 rack match.
Feijen continued with this strong mid-match run and after 13 racks was on the hill leading 8:5. In rack 14 he attempted a shot on the 3-ball but he missed it. Filler got back to the table and took that rack to move the match into another rack. Filler pulled back another rack in the next to trail 8:7 and remind Feijen he was not going down without a fight.
In rack 16 it was Feijen to break knowing that if he made a mistake and lost the rack it would be hill-hill with Filler to break in what would be the final rack. At 8:7, Feijen had some balls down and the 2-ball was the ball on. But it was blocked. Feijen could not play it. So he went for a push-out and put the cue ball against the side rail. Filler went for a safety shot and played it very well. Feijen needed to play a jump shot and hit the 2-ball with the cue ball rolling into a safe position. That was a lucky outcome for Feijen. Filler attempted another safety on the 2-ball but failed. He left an open table for Feijen who quickly and expertly took on the remaining balls and won the match with 9:7.
"I really enjoy playing here in St. Johann", stated Feijen after the match, "you walk out of the venue and have perfect nature in front of you. I really love this location most and maybe that’s why I’ve been able to win it two times now already", stated Feijen.
